The Suffering of Man

And when at last the light shines in and falls upon your face
How will it find your countenance? In glory or disgrace?
It’s times like these that make you stand or make you run and hide
Revealing all the love or fear of life you hold inside

All triumph and all failures leave a lifetime in their wake
And judging good from evil seems to me a great mistake
The common ground that we all share is so much greater than
The fear which separates us all. The suffering of Man.

Tonight it seems the darkest place is found within the heart
Which may be why it is the place where love will often start
The brightest fire so often seems to burn within the dark
So when your need is greatest gently blow upon that spark

Although the stars do fill the sky they do not fill the land
Their distance keeps their warmth from us, so try to understand
And feed that loving kindness to do all that you can
To bridge that gap which separates. The suffering of Man.

And when the clouds have broken and the Moon is shining bright
Will you hear the truth there spoken and try to make it right?

I am not interested at all in vengeance for its sake
And justice is a word we use for justifying hate
Towards others we believe have done us wrong in some great way
But striking back in anger does not take the pain away

The antidote for hate is love, and anger feeds the fire
Of discontented troubled souls so ladened with desire
Redemption’s cause is kindness towards the place where hate began
To heal what separates us all. The suffering of Man.
